AX64 Routes Audio at Producer and DJ Mark Slee's New Immersive Sanctuary
Having previously established Heron Arts in 2013 to promote arts and culture in San Francisco, Mark Slee is no stranger to creating innovative spaces that blend art and technology.
His newest venture revolves around the captivating convergence of light, immersive sound, and cutting-edge technology. Mark boasts an eclectic background, encompassing skills as a world-traveling DJ, a visual artist specializing in addressable LED lights, and a proficient developer, notably contributing to Envelop for Live—a collection of open-source tools for Ambisonics spatial audio processing using Cycling74's Max for Live.
Teaming up with our distributor in the UK, HHB Communications, Mark embarked on his latest project to craft a sophisticated 17.4 system that offers unparalleled sonic quality while remaining accessible to artists seeking to produce mesmerizing audio and visual experiences.
“The goal is to have a more studio, production, and technology development-oriented space. There aren’t a lot of spaces for artists to work on immersive audio in a more exploratory context, so it will be interesting to see what people will do with it and use that to inform how the technology evolves,” says Mark Slee.
Right from the outset, Mark had a clear preference for a Genelec based monitoring system. Keeping this in mind, HHB Communications recommended a meticulously crafted setup centered around seventeen 8351B coaxial monitors, elegantly complemented by four 7380A subwoofers.
To facilitate seamless operations, a DAD AX64, equipped with additional AES cards, was employed to provide a steady stream of audio to the Genelecs. This setup not only enabled distributed bass management and source selection but also offered comprehensive monitor control capabilities.
Moreover, the Genelec Loudspeaker Manager software took charge of room correction EQ, ensuring optimal audio quality and a finely-tuned listening experience for all users.
